SSI Education
ENACT PROJECT
The ENACT project is a 3-year project (July 2019 – June 2022) supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea (KNRF) grant funded by the Ministry of Education (NRF-2019S1A5A2A03041635). The ENACT project has been implemented as a semester long pedagogical intervention for college students attending several South Korean universities majoring in various basic science, science education, and engineering. The ultimate goal of ENACT project is to promote socially responsibility of citizens, specifically in the context of science/engineering research and application. Socially responsible citizens serve as proactive agents, willing to take action for resolving socioscientific issues (SSIs).
The term “ENACT” indicates first letters referring to the five steps of students’ investigation (Engage in SSIs; Navigate SSI; Anticipate consequences; Conduct scientific and engineering practices; Take action). As such, students choose and explore socioscientific issues (SSIs) of their own interest, then autonomously engage in scientific and engineering group projects where they develop solutions to the SSIs and conclude by sharing the solutions with their communities (e.g., local communities benefitting from the solution).
The ENACT model represents integration of the framework of SSI education and a project-based learning approach. The model consists of five steps of investigation, embedded in two cycles of learning. Cycle I aims to alter epistemological beliefs about science and technology of students, via having them identify SSIs and examining various aspects of the issues. Cycle II seeks to provide students with opportunities to practice responsible research investigation. During this cycle, students come up with scientific and engineering solutions to the chosen issues, and share them with their communities.
